Abstract

We present results for the digital restoration of the recently discovered Neidhart frescoes in Vienna, using partial differential equations. The Neidhart frescoes from the 14th century are depicting a cycle of songs of the 13th century minnesinger Neidhart von Reuental. These frescoes are corrupted by small gaps. In our previous Bridges paper for Bridges 2008, we presented Cahn-Hilliard inpainting for the reconstruction of the Neidhart frescoes. In this work we propose a combined strategy for the restoration of the frescoes, which we call binary based restoration method. This method uses the previously obtained binary structure inside the missing domain to fill in the grayvalues with a total variation approach.
